Mr Corneille KAREKEZI
Group Managing Director / Chief Executive Officer
After serving on the Board of Africa Re from 2003 to 2005, Mr Corneille KAREKEZI later joined the Corporation in July 2009 initially as Deputy Managing Director, for a transition period of 2 years, and subsequently as Deputy Managing Director/Chief Operating Officer in 2010, before rising to the current position of Group Managing Director / Chief Executive Officer in July 2011.
His professional career started in 1991 as Chief Accountant /Reinsurance Manager of the leading insurance company in Burundi (SOCABU s.m.), where he rose to the position of Head of the Finance Department. In 1995, he joined the leading insurance company in Rwanda (SONARWA s.a.) as Deputy Head of the Commercial & Technical Department. From 1996, he successively headed all the Technical Departments (Motor, Fire, Accidents & Miscellaneous Risks, and Life) and was appointed Deputy Managing Director in early 2001. In February 2008, he was appointed Chief Executive Officer of SONARWA s.a.
Mr KAREKEZI holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Postgraduate Diplomas in Business Administration, a Master’s Degree in Management and a Honorary Doctorate in Business Administration. He speaks English, French and Swahili fluently and has contributed significantly to the development of the industry in Africa.
He is the current Vice Chairman of Africa Re South Africa Ltd. (South Africa) and Africa Retakaful Corporation (Egypt), Member of the Board of Shelter Afrique (Kenya) and Member of the Executive Committee of the African Insurance Organization (AIO).

Corneille KAREKEZI
Directeur Général du Groupe
Après avoir siégé au Conseil d’administration d’Africa Re de 2003 à 2005, il est devenu Directeur Général Adjoint de cette même institution en juillet 2009, puis Directeur Général Adjoint/Chef des Opérations en 2010. Il accède au poste de Directeur Général du Groupe Africa Re en juillet 2011.
KAREKEZI a commencé sa carrière à la SOCABU, principale compagnie d’assurances du Burundi, où il a gravi les échelons jusqu’au poste de Chef du département des finances. En 1995, il est recruté par la SONARWA, principale compagnie d’assurance du Rwanda, comme chef adjoint du Département commercial et technique. A partir de 1996, il a géré avec succès toutes les directions techniques (Automobile, Incendie, Accidents & Risques divers, et Vie). Il devient Directeur Général Adjoint de la compagnie en début 2001. En février 2008, M. KAREKEZI est désigné Directeur Général de la SONARWA.
KAREKEZI est titulaire d’une Licence en économie (Burundi), de diplômes d’études universitaires supérieures en gestion des entreprises, d’un Master’s en gestion et d’un Doctorat Honoris Causa en gestion. Il a fortement contribué au développement de l’industrie des assurances en Afrique.
Il parle couramment l’anglais, le français et le swahili.
Il est Vice-Président du Conseil d’administration d’Africa Re South Africa Ltd. (SA) ; il occupe le même poste dans le Conseil d’administration d’Africa Retakaful Corporation (Egypte). Il est également membre du Conseil d’administration de Shelter Afrique, la plus grande institution panafricaine de financement de l’habitat; il est membre du Comité exécutif de l’Organisation des Assurances Africaines (OAA).
